Rosetta Summerset Obituary

Howard Mortuary 40 N Center Avenue, officially announces the passing of Ms. Rosetta Summerset 76 of Reidsville, GA.  Ms. Summerset entered her eternal rest on March 4, 2024 at Community Hospice in Vidalia, GA.

Mrs. Rosetta Bernice Baker-Summersett was born on February 23, 1948 to the parentage of the late Henry Baker Jr and Beatrice Kitchen Baker.  She departed this life on March 4, 2024.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry Baker Jr and Beatrice Baker, a sister Mary Louise Roberson and a brother Dwight R. Baker.  Rosetta joined the Mt Moriah Baptist Church, McGregor at an early age and was a member of the choir, missionary department and served as youth director for many years.   She was also active in the Oconee Zion Association and served in various capacities including Youth Director during her earlier Christian years.  In 2013, she joined her husband in ministry at the Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church, Lyons GA where she worked faithfully in various capacities of the church. 

She was a 1965 honor graduate of the Montgomery County Training School.  After graduation from high school, she attended Savannah State College and received her B.S. degree in Biology graduating Cum Laude.  She furthered her education at the Georgia Southern University receiving both her Masters and Specialist of Education Degrees in Secondary Science and School Administration.  As a dedicated educator, she received many honors and recognition including Teacher of the Year at the Vidalia High School during the 1992/1993 school year.  She started her teaching career in the Treutlen County School system having taught there for 6 years.  She moved to the Vidalia City School System during her 7th year of teaching and worked in the Vidalia School system for 27 years.  She served as science teacher and the head of the science department for 21 years before moving from the classroom to administration.  She served 6 years as Assistant Principal of the J.R. Tripp Middle School until her retirement from the Vidalia City School system.  While working with the Vidalia City School System, she also served as adjunct professor for Brewton Parker College and Southeastern Technical College for over 20 years.  She continued to work after retiring from the Vidalia City School system with the Southeastern Technical College retired as an Adult Education Instructor.  She retired from Southeastern Technical College in 2018 to devote the remainder of her years to her family, ministry and civic activities.    

Rosetta was also involved in several fraternal and civic organizations including Bright Star and Star of Glenville Order of the Eastern Star.  She was a past District Matron for the Vidalia District of OES.  She was also a charter member of the Toombs-Montgomery Alumni Chapter of Savannah State University and served as President.  She was a member of the Tatnall County NAACP, the John Kunney Scholarship Committee and the Tatnall County Back to School Initiative. 

She leaves to cherish her memory, her husband Rev. Dr. Roy L. Summersett of Reidsville, two sisters Elmira E. Andrews of Ailey and Cena R. Baker of Dublin, GA.  Four brothers, Henry L. (Joy) Baker, Robert L. (Leila)Baker, Rev. Samuel C. (Yvette) Baker and Alvin D. (Jacqueline) Baker all of Ailey.  One Aunt, Ruby Brown of Vidalia GA

Step Children, Shelena Summersett, Christopher Summersett, Napelon Brown and Nakkyia Roundtree.  Sisters In Laws, Sarah Carter, Joyce Robinson, Janice (Rev. Dr. Artis)Carswell, Mary Ann (Michael)Petway all of Reidsville, GA.  Brother In Laws, Benny Summersett and Michael Summersett of Reidsville GA, Theron Summersett of Plainfield NJ, John (Cindy) Summersett of Vidalia; 18 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren and many other nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
