Mrs. Mary Katherine Simmons was born to the late Mary Newkirk and the late Theodore Powell on July 11, 1933 in Glenwood, Ga. She received her education in Wheeler County, Georgia.
Mrs. Simmons was united in Holy Matrimony to the late Thomas Edward Simmons on March 14, 1953. To this union, seven children were born of which one daughter, Joyce, preceded them in death.
Katherine retired in 2001 working in Food Services with Wheeler County Board of Education.
She was a member of Glenwood Grove Baptist Church at an early age and later joined Evening Light Church of God where she served faithfully as a Sunday school teacher, an usher and various other positions until her health declined. Mrs. Simmons made her transition from labor here on earth to her reward on Sunday, February 14, 2021.
Cherishing her memories are her six (6) children: Jacquelyn Okolo (George) of Lawrenceville, GA, James Simmons (Jacquelyn) of Jacksonville, FL, Vickie Bryant (Jessie) of Glenwood, GA, Judy Dolby (Joseph) of McDonough, GA, Joey Simmons (Maudicer) of Glenwood, GA and Lewis Simmons (Minister Doris)of Dublin, GA; Two (2) sisters: Evangelist Josephine Carpenter (Rev. Moses) of Brooklyn, New York and Jean McRae of Clarksville, Tennessee; one brother, Eschol Newkirk (Deborah) of McRae, GA.. She will truly be missed by eighteen (18) grandchildren, thirty four (34) great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. She was fondly called “Mama”, “Big Mama” or “Grandma” by all her grandchildren. She will also be missed by a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
